Deaf Studies Program celebrates 30 years; SEL, CDDA and SignVote host events; Norma Morán selected for leadership program; Grant round-up; Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger summit Manaslu
The Deaf Studies program in the School of Arts and Humanities is celebrating its 30th anniversary with many events and discussions throughout the academic year. The first two events were a presentation by the renowned Deaf artist Christine Sun Kim about her work and experience promoting a Deaf Public Voice that calls on hearing people to listen more attentively. The second, held during the International Week of Deaf People last week, was an interactive presentation by scholar-in-residence Dr. Annelies Kusters on Language Portraits and a lecture by guest presenter Fabrice Bertin on French Deaf Protest Movements.

Norma Morán selected to participate in leadership program
Norma Morán, associate director of the Center for Latine Deaf Studies, has been selected to participate in the Enlace Mid-level Leadership Program of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). She is one of 54 participants in this six-month leadership development program for mid-level college and university professionals. Congratulations, Norma!
Gallaudet has received several major multi-year grants in the last few weeks, totaling several million dollars. One is for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Technology Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (DHH-RERC). Another is for an AI tool to enhance collaborative learning in university biology classes for deaf students. Taken together, these grants show our commitment to research to enhance the lives of deaf people the world over. We congratulate all the grant recipients!
Alumni Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger have done it again – this time climbing Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest mountain, in Nepal. We have a story on our website, and links to stories about their previous climbs. Congratulations, Scott and Shayna!
